EP Double Feature Review: Psychic Hit & Mütherload

Not one but two brand new acts plan to release their debut EP’s on July 9th and Hated One has got you covered for the scoop on both of them! California’s Psychic Hit and Canada’s Mütherload... dig ‘em! \m/

Psychic Hit – Solutio

Hailing just across the bay from the Haight-Ashbury hippie hive, Oakland’s proto-metal tribe known as Psychic Hit have certainly absorbed and incorporated a great deal of the West Coast counterculture into their sound and image; and nowhere is this more evident than upon Solutio, the quintet’s debut release with Seeing Red Records.

Although labeled in some circles as an LP, the six phenomenal new compositions that comprise Solutio clock in at just under thirty minutes, and though a minute-and-a-half may not be a massive amount of time, boundaries exist for good reasons. So, all apologies to whoever tried to squeak this one by as a full-length, but Solutio still falls in the EP category.

LP or EP, though, all that truly matters is that the fuzzed-out, riff-driven songs of Psychic Hit’s Solutio are thoroughly transfixing and fantastically performed. Psychotropic, psychedelic, and pleasantly harkening back to metal’s earliest days, tracks such as “Livin’ On” (see video below), “Orocovis”, and “The Hand of Fate” encapsulate everything that is great and glorious about proto-metal, so don’t miss this debut release from the guys and gals of Psychic Hit, Solutio, due out July 9th from Seeing Red! Mütherload – Ü

London, Ontario’s Mütherload may be a new act by all degrees and measures, but being made up of grizzled Canadian metal veterans, they sure do not sound like a new act in the slightest!

Sludgy, groovy, and louder than the impact of a speeding Mack truck with an icy bridge abutment, Mütherload’s debut EP Ü is a six-track independent monster that should most definitely perk up many an ear with its heavy, heavy tunes.

With cumbrous cuts like “Insect”, “The Visitor” (see video below), and “Iniquity” leading the way upon Ü, Mütherload will certainly appeal to the lovers of acts like Mastodon, High on Fire, and Black Tusk while also being accessible to the Lamb of God/Machine Head crowds, too.

So, be sure to be on top of Ü by Canada’s Mütherload as soon as it drops July 9th, and you can thank Hated One later! Ω
