2021 just may go down in history as one of the greatest years ever for metal releases (thanks for the silver lining, Covid!), and no more so than in the often-intertwined realms of technical, progressive, and extreme death.
The list of exceptional LPs in the subgenres so far this year is already stunning: Abiotic, The Lylat Continuum, Ominous Ruin, Gojira, Fractal Universe, Siderean, and Pestilence have all issued new works that have brought home distinct praise and adulation, while EPs from artists such as Demon King, Unfathomable Ruination, Hideous Divinity, and Param-Nesia have all fared similarly well.
Toss that in with forthcoming releases landing soon from acts like Between the Buried and Me, Burial in the Sky (featuring former Cognitive vocalist Jorel Hart), Fleshbore, Aborted, Replicant, First Fragment, Ophidian I, Vulvodynia, and Obscura – and rumored finished material from acts such as Archspire, The Zenith Passage, Warforged, and Muldrotha – and 2021 promises to be one of the most memorable years in tech, prog, and extreme death history.
However, there is still one release that has yet to be mentioned that adds even further weight to this already magnificent list of established all-stars and rising acts with releases to be proud of this year. On July 16th, New Jersey’s extreme technical death wizards known as Cognitive are returning with Unique Leader Records to bring forth Malevolent Thoughts of a Hastened Extinction, and believe it as it is written, ladies and germs, this album brings some serious weight to 2021!
Brutally breakneck, technically astounding, and thoroughly mind melting, Malevolent Thoughts of a Hastened Extinction represents the jewel in the crown of Cognitive’s collected works since their formation a decade ago. Advancing in amazingness with each release, Cognitive spent the time doing things the right way since 2011, incessantly playing tiny, local clubs all over the country for years before finally being spotted by California’s Unique Leader Records in late 2015/early 2016.
Since then, the once-tech-but-now-mostly-“core”-based label has backed this quintet from The Garden State to the tune of three LP’s including their latest masterpiece, Malevolent Thoughts. Picking up right where their last opus Matricide left off in 2018, Malevolent Thoughts is one insane blast of extreme technical splendor after another from the immensely talented lads in Cognitive.
Highlights of this near-perfect release include out and out rippers like "Eniac", “The Maw”, “From the Depths”, and “Of a Hastened Extinction” are classically cumbrous Cognitive concoctions, but truly it is the solo-licious stunners such as “Oroborous”, the single “To Feed the Worms”, “Malevolent Thoughts”, and “Destitute” that ultimately make this album one of the year’s best, no matter the genre. Absolutely jaw-dropping shit.
