Review of Disavowed - "Revocation of the Fallen"

All hail the triumphant return of another long-lost, death metal prodigy!

Way back yonder in 2007, a sick album named Stagnated Existence dropped, and although the accepted production style for brutal death metal back then was more in the “toilet bowl” vain, the Amsterdam-based act that released the album showed tons of promise in the form of progressive/technical leanings and a vocalist in Robbe Kok who didn’t just fall in line and follow the customary, Chris Barnes vocal pattern (and seriously, thank the gods for that).

Unfortunately, though, their existence from the outset was plagued with lineup issues – specifically in the drumming department – and not long after releasing Stagnated Existence, the members of Disavowed decided to put the act on a long hiatus and to pursue other projects.

But in 2015, with the acquisition of a permanent drummer in Septimiu Harsan, the other four original members of Disavowed (who had always stayed in touch through other mutual projects) decided to give the old idea another shot. Fast forward to 2020, and Disavowed have officially and unquestionably returned with the impending release of their first full-length album in thirteen years, Revocation of the Fallen, due out July 31st via Indonesia’s Brutal Mind label.

Invigorated, clamorous, and terrifyingly technical throughout, Revocation of the Fallen marks the epic comeback of this Dutch wunderkind. Featuring ten calamitous cuts that slice, dice, and slash through thirty-three minutes worth of exceptionally progressive, brutal death metal, Disavowed’s first effort in well over a decade ranks immediately among the best death metal releases of the year. Full stop.

Some of the choicest selections on this phenomenal album include the first single, “The Enlightened One”, the title track “Revocation of the Fallen”, and the bass-slappin’ freneticism of “Egocentric Entity”; but, truth be told, the entirety of Revocation of the Fallen is summarily terrific, so Hated One’s advice is to just start at track one and let this bad boy run!
