Authentic modern doom metal is the ultimate antithesis to the anachronistic norms established by the popular music industry in the 1950’s. Put into simpler terms: short, catchy tunes that you can sing along to. Now, while there is always something to be said for tunes that you can sing along to, when it pertains to short, catchy tunes however, the entire rock industry left both of those profit-driven ideals in the dust a long, long time ago (seriously, even Elton John put out an eleven-minute single in the 1970’s, and if that does not drive home the point, then nothing else will).
But still, while most acts who espouse the doom moniker top out around ten to twelve minutes per track – and then maddeningly attempt to cram seven to nine tracks onto one album (for the love of the gods, please stop!) – only the purists out there are writing and releasing true doom: fifteen-plus minute sojourns that turn the definition of epic on its head and send the genre into the stratosphere of Brobdingnagian proportions.
Averaging two to four rapturous songs per release that also average around seventeen minutes per song, Osnabrück, Germany’s doom idealists Eremit may yet be considered newcomers when compared to their influences, but their unyielding approach to writing protracted, profound doom metal has already ranked them on par with some of the genre’s purest purists such as Chicago’s Bongripper, Austin’s Canyon of the Skull, and Oregon’s Yob.
Never compromising, never listening to producers or radio jockeys pestering them to write “singles”, and never, ever lacking in length, breadth, or depth, Eremit will soon make their emphatic return with their second full-length release in six years, Bearer of Many Names, due out June 11th from India’s rising-star label, Transcending Obscurity Records.
Featuring a scant three tracks that combine to comprise an enormous hour and six minutes worth of pristine, unblemished doom metal, Bearer of Many Names presents the genre precisely as it should be (at least according to Hated One, anyway): deeply, heavily, and unapologetically esoterically.
Track one is “Enshrined in Indissoluble Chains and Enlightened Darkness”, and in vinyl format will surely represent the entirety of Side A, for this one song is nearly thirty minutes worth of doom, despair, darkness, and audacity. Yes, audacity, for it takes some serious brass cojones to write a song whose length can run with any modern television program, commercials and all... and it’s not a boring thirty minutes, either. No, instead, “Enshrined” is an amazing journey, with ups, downs, peaks, valleys, a climax, and even an anticlimax. Amazing shit.
Tracks two and three, “Secret Powers Entrenched in an Ancient Artefact” and “Unmapped Territories of Clans Without Names” respectively, are two more eighteen-plus-minute compositions that will undoubtedly constitute Side B, and each cut is as deep and powerful as the other. Snaking along like twin primordial rivers through unknown lands, both “Secret Powers” and “Unmapped Territories” close out Bearer of Many Names with a complexity and thoroughness that is nearly incomparable in metal today.
Not for everyone all the time, but perfect for just the right person at just the right time, Eremit’s Bearer of Many Names is an impeccable representation of the purest distillation of doom metal available today. It is prolonged, it is penetrating, and above all, it is wholly captivating.
